MacLeans help spread awareness of diabetes to Parkwood students

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month, and fourth grader Amelia MacLean has helped her classmates understand her experiences of dealing with Type 1 diabetes since she was 5 years old.

Today, the fourth grade teachers at Parkwood Elementary School, who were all wearing Support Squad #DiabetesAwareness T-shirts, had children’s book author Laura Heitert, the wife of the school’s DARE officer Bob Heitert, come and talk about her book “Maddie’s Me Bag” with their students. Art teacher Janel MacLean helped set up this opportunity to spread awareness of diabetes.

After Laura Heitert talked about her book and showed several devices that have helped her manage her Type 1 diabetes, she answered questions from the students.

“It was nice having someone else come in and talk about it, too,” Amelia MacLean said.
